The meaning of ‘a monster’ has changed over time. Originally being dark and dangerous, to more recently monsters being represented in popular culture as misunderstood or struggling creatures. In the work Monsters we live with 2022, I have referenced this changing idea of a monster. Through the enlarging of the imagery of a Gecko’s skull (a tiny item) I wanted to bring a juxtaposition between fear and intrigue; between light and dark. We have many Geckos in our house, they live with us and beside us. They continue their lives, shedding skin, being born, breeding and dying without us being aware; the Gecko’s shed skin and skull representing the universal theme of life and death.
