Teaching is a dynamic and rewarding profession. The capacity to provide experiences for students requires a foundation of knowledge, skills and capacities built in the early years of teaching. The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs) describe the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of competent and effective teachers.
The APSTs are a public statement of what constitutes teacher quality. They define the work of teachers and make explicit the elements of high-quality, effective teaching in twenty-first century schools that will improve educational outcomes for students. The Standards do this by providing a framework that clarifies the professional knowledge, professional practice and professional engagement required of teachers across their careers.
