Conversations: Virtual Immersive Environments SIG
Exploring Spatial for Education
For our first SIG meeting in 2023 we visited Spatial. A small group of intrepid VIE explorers started their journey at the UniSQ Spatial lounge and ended at the fireside (see pic above). Along the way we visited an art gallery and a hospital room with open eyes and minds about how we might use these spaces in our teaching and learning.
One of the great features of spatial is that it is browser-based so you don’t need to download any extra software. At the moment we are trialling it as academics with an eye to how we might use it with our students.
JoKay and I have had many years of experience using virtual worlds in higher education and K-12. We are really excited to explore your ideas and we are ready to answer any questions, concerns and challenges you might perceive.
Some of the uses we discussed include:
- Simulation of real-life environments
- Art galleries for the display of work and for teasure hunts
- Orientation social events for students
- Role play for clinical disciplines such as social work, education and nursing.
A great way to get started is to create your own room or rooms in spatial. They have a how to that will help – How to create a room in spatial.
You don’t have to share them with anyone for you to be able to explore and experience the space. If you are feeling like it just isn’t doing what you want it to drop me an email or teams chat and I can come and help.
Drop-In times
To support our exploration in spatial I will be in the UniSQ spatial lounge for a drop in on Wednesdays at 1pm. Come and say hi. If you want to meet at another time just let me know and we can organise something. If you have another space you would like us to all look at also just let me know.
