Introduction to HyFlex Learning and Teaching

13 Oct 2022 | HyFlex, Innovation, ThinkPiece | 1 comment

HyFlex learning is a combination of the terms hybrid and flexible. The term was coined by Brian Beatty in 2006. Hybrid learning, similar to and often called blended learning, is a combination of online and on-campus in-person activities using largely synchronous learning modes. HyFlex means that hybrid online learning opportunities are provided for students that leverage both synchronous and asynchronous modes.

In addition to this, a more flexible learning environment is provided where students can not only choose how they want to learn but when and where, with the flexibility for change during a semester or across a program. The “flexible” aspect of HyFlex is that students are given choice in how they participate in the course and engage with material in the mode that works best for them over the course and from session to session.

Attributes of HyFlex

Based on the Beatty (2019) model of HyFlex Principles, the approach shared in this ThinkPiece identifies three key attributes. These are:

  • Choice: providing a range of choices for the learner
  • Flat learning (Lindsay, 2016): connected, social, no hierarchy
  • Accessibility: equality assured by embedded universal design principles

HyFlex is applicable to a variety of learning situations and is a key design approach for online learning. It is an imperative pedagogy relevant to current online learning challenges and improving student achievement in higher education.
