On 2 February, 2023, Daniel Chalker Program Manager for Student Support and Advising shared his team’s technology-enabled Student Advising efforts with the Student Engagement SIG.

Using evidence-based, industry best-practice methods, the Student Support and Advising team are centralising data collected from multiple student-facing platforms into a single platform. This collation is enabling comprehensive data analysis to take place, and develop a greater understanding of our student cohort, which will allow for proactive retention strategies, personalised to a student’s individual circumstances to take place. Alongside the newly established Student Advising Team, strategies will be devised with various colleagues, allowing UniSQ to provide tailored advice and student support, relevant to a student’s circumstances and program of study, enhancing retention and student success.

While Daniel humbly introduced us to the platform as ‘business-as-usual’ and ‘under-construction’, it is nothing short of extraordinary. Not only will the Student Advising Team be able to provide early intervention and sustained, proactive support, UniSQ staff will be able to access a ‘one-stop-shop’ of data analytics which can be analysed by program, cohort, course, or, most importantly, student. In time, the database will additionally identify if individual students have been offered support by another area of the university, ensuring that students are neither overwhelmed, or under-whelmed by support.

The platform provides untold opportunities for measuring, understanding, and supporting student engagement. For more information, contact Daniel. UniSQ employees can access a recording of the SIG meeting here.
