On the second of June, 2023, Ben Ingram, Coordinator of Peer Learning, introduced the Pathways to Innovation SIG to Miro, an online collaborative whiteboard.  Ben has used Miro extensively with PASS leaders and shared his experiences, as well as several suggestions for how we could use Miro in our teaching.

Ben used a Miro board (click here to access the board) to demonstrate Miro’s features, as well as how easy it is to create and use boards.  The variety of different uses for the tool, from brainstorms and graphic organisers, to the gamification of learning, was immediately evident.  Excitingly, the templates within Miro help novice uses create more interesting boards in less time. Ben’s last piece of good news – Education licences are free: Education Plan – Miro Help Center.

Below is one of the Miro boards we created during the meeting showing the outcomes of the session:

Some key take-aways and tips for using Miro:

  • On board students: Allow students to ‘play’ with Miro prior to the session.  You might even like to do your icebreaker in Miro so that students use it for the first time in a low stakes environment.
  • Introduce the features slowly: Keep the first sessions simple by introducing dragging, dropping, and writing on post-its as a first step.
  • Write instructions for use/activites on the boards themselves: People tune out during verbal instructions, so they need a reference point.
  • Make navigation easy: use and highlight frames for people; provide options for navigation; and use the ‘bring to me function’.
