Conversations: Student Engagement SIG
Unpacking the Online Engagement Framework – Dr Alice Brown
“Student engagement is understood to be an important benchmark and indicator of the quality of the student experience for higher education; yet the term engagement continues to be elusive to define and it is interpreted in different ways in the literature.”
We all know the importance of student engagement, but do we understand its complexities?
When we started the Student Engagement SIG, our first questions weren’t about technologies, they were about students:
- How do students want to engage when they study online?
- What dis-engages a student?
- What re-engages a student?
So, we decided to explore these questions, before we explored the digital technologies that enhance engagement.
Fortunately, we were not alone in our enquiries. Members of the USQ community have recently published a new model for online engagement and were happy to unpack it for us.
In 2018, Petrea Redmond, Lindy-Anne Abawi, Alice Brown, Robyn Henderson, and Amanda Heffernan devised their online engagement framework. Their paper identified five different elements of online engagement:
- Social engagement
- Cognitive engagement
- Behavioral engagement
- Collaborative engagement
- Emotional engagement
Alice joined the SIG to clarify the framework. You’ll find the clip below.
