Student Success Advising – Exploring Student Engagement

by | 9 Dec 2021 | Student Engagement SIG | 0 comments

The USQ Academic Plan for 2019-2022 includes Student Success Advising, which it articulates as a:

“systematic approach to proactive, data-driven, timely outbound contact with students to offer information, advice, support and mentoring with the aim of increasing persistence with learning, assessment submission, course completion, grade achievement and progression into subsequent courses.”

Though a recent addition to USQ’s support portfolio, student success advising is not a new concept within tertiary education. There is a great deal of literature to support its use, and many questions yet to be answered. Consider these words from George Steele.

Two of the most important issues facing those in the field of academic advising are the use of technology and data analytics. The question is not if technology, big data, and data analytics will shape the delivery and expectations for academic advising in higher education, but “how?”
(Steele, 2018, p.59)

Recently, Clinton Bell, Student Support Coordinator (Strategic Operations), with Student Support and Retention, spoke to us about student success advising and how student engagement is explored at USQ.
